Understanding the Born-Again Experience

The born-again experience the most important moment a person can ever encounter. When someone genuinely accepts Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour, they receive new life from God. They are spiritually regenerated, renewed, and brought into a new relationship with Him.

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”

— 2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV

To be born again is not simply to identify as Christian. It is the beginning of a second life in Christ.

The First Life and the Second Life

Every person begins with a first life: the natural life into which they are physically born. However, it is the will of God that mankind enter into a second life through salvation.

“Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

— John 3:3 KJV

This second life is spiritual. It is the moment a person passes from darkness into light and begins a true relationship with God.

Romans 6:4 says that believers should “walk in newness of life.” This newness of life is the evidence of the born-again experience. Once a person receives salvation, their desires, passions, and priorities begin to change. The things of the world lose their power, and the things of God begin to take root.

The first life is natural and carnal. The second life is spiritual and eternal in nature.

How Do We Access the Second Life?

The second life begins with salvation.

“That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”

— Romans 10:9 KJV

Salvation involves both the heart and the mouth. A person must believe in their heart and confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.

“For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”

— Romans 10:10 KJV

The prayer of salvation is the access point into the second life. However, it must be offered sincerely. God sees the heart, and no one can receive Jesus Christ casually or without true surrender.

Once a person understands that Jesus Christ is Lord and Saviour, they should not delay salvation. The born-again experience is the most important moment of a person’s life because it opens the door to forgiveness, eternal life, the Holy Spirit, a new heart, and the fatherhood of God.

1. Access to the Forgiveness of Sins

One of the first blessings of salvation is the forgiveness of sins.

Before salvation, mankind stands guilty under the weight of sin. But through Jesus Christ, forgiveness becomes available.

“Him hath God exalted with his right hand to be a Prince and a Saviour, for to give repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins.”

— Acts 5:31 KJV

The forgiveness of sins is one of humanity’s greatest needs. Only Jesus Christ has the authority to redeem mankind from sin.

Acts 26:18 describes salvation as turning “from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God,” so that people may “receive forgiveness of sins.”

This is why Christianity is called the good news. The mercy of God is greater than the failures of our past. No matter what a person has done, genuine salvation opens the door to forgiveness and cleansing.

“And you, being dead in your sins… hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses.”

— Colossians 2:13 KJV

In the first life, the verdict of sin is guilty. Through salvation, the believer receives forgiveness and is made new in Christ.

2. Access to Heaven and Eternal Life

The human body is temporary, but the soul and spirit are eternal. Physical life will end, but our spiritual existence continues.

Heaven is a real spiritual destination prepared by God. Access to eternal life comes only through Jesus Christ.

“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.”

— John 17:3 KJV

Truth is not determined by human opinion. Spiritual truth is established by God.

Jesus said:

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

— John 3:16 KJV

Those who receive the born-again experience receive the promise of eternal life.

“For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

— Romans 6:23 KJV

This is why salvation should never be delayed. Through Christ, the believer gains access to eternal life and the hope of Heaven.

3. The Entrance of the Holy Spirit

At the moment of salvation, the Spirit of God enters the life of the believer.

Jesus said:

“Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.”

— John 3:5 KJV

The born-again experience gives the believer access to the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit. Through salvation, we become temples of the Spirit of God.

The Holy Spirit is our Comforter and Teacher.

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost… he shall teach you all things.”

— John 14:26 KJV

The Bible also says:

“In whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise.”

— Ephesians 1:13 KJV

The day of salvation is the day the believer is sealed by the Holy Spirit. From that moment, the Spirit of God begins to dwell within the child of God.

4. A New Heart

At salvation, God gives the believer a new spiritual heart.

“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you.”

— Ezekiel 36:26 KJV

This is not a physical heart transplant. It is a spiritual transformation.

The new heart produces new desires, passions, and ambitions. A person who once lived entirely for the world begins to desire God and the things of His Kingdom.

“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”

— Psalm 51:10 KJV

The old heart is a heart of stone. The new heart is a heart made sensitive to God.

This is the power of the born-again experience: God does not merely forgive us; He transforms us from within.

5. Access to the Fatherhood of God

One of the greatest blessings of salvation is that God becomes our Father.

“Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God.”

— 1 John 3:1 KJV

Through salvation, believers become children of God.

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God.”

— John 1:12 KJV

The fatherhood of God is activated in the life of the believer through salvation. God begins to deal with us not only as His creation, but as His children.

Our Heavenly Father cares for every aspect of the lives of His children.

“But the very hairs of your head are all numbered.”

— Matthew 10:30 KJV

He provides, leads, protects, and corrects. His correction is also an expression of His love.

“For whom the Lord loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.”

— Proverbs 3:12 KJV

Even when a natural father has failed, God remains the perfect Father. He is faithful, righteous, and dependable.

The closer we grow to God, the more tangible His fatherhood becomes in our lives.

The Second Life Changes You

The proof of the born-again experience is transformation.

The second life changes the heart, the desires, the identity, and the direction of a person’s life. It gives access to the forgiveness of sins, eternal life, the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit, a new heart, and the fatherhood of God.

The first life is the life we receive through natural birth.

The second life begins when we are born again.

The third is eternal life with God.

Jesus made the requirement clear:

“Ye must be born again.”

— John 3:7 KJV

Salvation is not something to delay. It is the doorway into new life and the beginning of a true relationship with God.
